Path of Exile 2 0.5.0 Expedition Best Strategy | Logbooks, Runes & Defenses
Are you also frustrated by the unsatisfactory rewards dropped by monsters in Path of Exile 2, and constantly failing your expeditions because you're killed by monsters? Read this guide; it contains all the tips you need.
In Path of Exile 2 0.5.0, Expedition has become one of the most profitable endgame strategies. Its core logic is very simple: awaken buried Kalguuran monsters through chained Explosives; the more runes stacked, the stronger the monsters and the richer the loot. This article will guide you through mastering the best way to play this event, based on practical experience, from logbook selection and rune choices to path planning and survival building.
Logbook and Island Rumours Selection Logic

Expedition Logbook is the key to starting your expedition, revealing an area containing multiple islands on the ocean map. Each logbook displays up to three Island Rumours, each corresponding to a specific map or boss encounter. Choosing the right logbook is the first step to profitability.
Worthwhile Rumor Combinations
Based on practical experience, I've compiled a list of Rumors with decent loot and their corresponding maps for your reference:
- Fallen Stars - Map: Moor of Fallen Skies. This is currently one of the most valuable Rumors because it guarantees an Aldur's Saga, the only non-boss Saga focused entirely on improving the quality of expedition nodes.
- Endless Cliffs - Map: Craggy Peninsula.
- Warm but risky - Map: Grazed Prairie.
- Stardrinker - Boss: Uhtred, Stardrinker; this is a boss encounter, not a map.
Decision-Making Principles
Before deciding whether to embark on a voyage, our general rule is: if a Logbook has at least three map-type Rumors (i.e., non-boss Rumors), it's worth checking. The only exception is Sloughed Gully – this map is considered one of the worst in the game, with an extremely low return on investment; avoid it unless there are no other options.
It's worth noting that Olroth's Saga guarantees an encounter with Olroth, Origin of the Fall, in the next Logbook run. This boss drops extremely valuable loot, making it a significant source of income.
Rune Ratings and Trade-offs
In PoE 2 Expedition, each bomb site reveals a Remnant with several rune slots. The runes determine the tier of loot dropped by that wave of monsters. Below are the current rune ratings:
S-Tier Runes
- Opulent - Increases monster rarity and spawns more Rare Monsters, which are the primary source of loot.
- Power - Enhances the effects of all other runes, doubling their benefits; extremely high returns.
- Bond - Adds more Monster modifiers to rare monsters; the more modifiers a monster has, the better the loot it drops.
- Rebirth - Resurrects a dead monster, so killing it again means an extra loot drop.
- Death - Normal monsters merge into Magic monsters, and Magic monsters merge into Rare monsters, making their drops more valuable.
- Time - Monsters are considered higher rarity upon death, meaning a consistent increase in drop quality.
Unrecommended Runes
- Soul - For each monster killed in a wave, the remaining monsters gain 6% Toughness and 2% increased damage. This rune is extremely risky, as it can make the last monster potentially harder than the boss. While the benefits are high, it's recommended only for characters with sufficiently good gear.
- Oath - Generates a large number of normal monsters, but since most loot comes from Rare and Magic monsters, normal monsters are extremely inefficient, sometimes severely slowing down map clearing.
High-Value Currencies to Watch Out For
Some Remnants, while not top-tier runes themselves, offer valuable currency rewards worth keeping, such as: Greater Chaos Orb, Perfect Chaos Orb, Perfect Exalted Orb, etc. In practice, even with subpar runes, it's worth unlocking high-value Path of Exile 2 currency if they come with them.
Path Planning and Map Clearing Efficiency
Planning Principles
- Prioritize key runes: Upon entering the map, observe all Remnant rune combinations and prioritize nodes containing S-tier runes.
- Maximize the coverage of each burst: Extend each burst as far as possible to save burst attempts and cover more nodes with less cost.
- Avoid backtracking: Plan a circular or linear route and avoid backtracking.
Map Clearing Position
Standing in the center of a monster group is far more efficient than advancing from the edges. This is because monsters in PoE 2 Expedition spawn from all directions, and standing in the center maximizes the coverage of AOE skills. Clearing from the side is only about 60% faster than standing in the center. However, this requires your character to be strong enough to withstand damage in the center.
Survival Guide
Expedition is one of the most defense-intensive aspects of Path of Exile 2 0.5.0. I've compiled two core causes of death and corresponding countermeasures.
Control Chains: Freeze, Stun, Electrocute
Expedition monsters typically carry more control effects than other content monsters:
- Freeze: A single hit from a monster can freeze you. Always equip a freeze immunity charm; otherwise, being frozen means certain death.
- Stun:Similar to freeze in lethality, but not completely immune. Use the Bear Charm, which provides 60% Stun Threshold and 20% damage reduction to help you avoid being instantly killed by a stun.
- Electrocute: This is the most dangerous control effect, which cannot be immune or mitigated with charms. The only way to mitigate it is to unlock Morgana, Storm Seer node on Passive tree; otherwise, being electrocuted is a 4-second hard stun, guaranteed to kill you.
Reflection
Expedition monsters reflect shock and chill effects back to the character. Shock increases the damage you take by 20%, while Chill reduces your movement speed by 50%, essentially a slow death.
To address this, Morgana node is equally effective. It reduces the impact of shock, and this can be mitigated further by stacking shock and chill reduction affixes through gear and talents.
Exiles, Expedition isn't a question of whether you can play it, but whether you can play it efficiently. With the right gear and strategy, Expedition is the most reliable money-making machine in Path of Exile 2: Return of the Ancients. Good luck with your loot!
