Path of Exile 2 Return of the Ancients: ARPG King Isn't Slowing Down

Grinding Gear Games will host a Return of the Ancients launch event livestream at 1 PM PST on May 7th, but the update won't officially go live until 1 PM PST on May 29th.
While GGG's previous statements have revealed some details, Return of the Ancients trailer hasn't revealed much about the update's specifics. In the 30-second trailer, a massive fortress rises, enclosing a portion of Wraeclast.
Endless World map, where the game's endgame content is located, will also receive a major overhaul in this update, perhaps indicating that the new version will be related to these returning ancient creatures. Many players are eagerly anticipating this.

Unparalleled Character Customization
Other ARPGs offer ready-made frameworks, but PoE 2 provides a huge box of Lego bricks, allowing you to freely build your own character. This might be why some players find the game overly complex, but it's also precisely where the fun lies.
Each class has no fixed path; all classes share a vast skill tree. Your initial class only determines your starting point; everything else is up to you.
Exponential power growth: The game uses a multiplicative damage calculation method. Later in the game, character power doesn't increase gradually but rather exponentially, providing players with tremendous long-term motivation.
WASD Revolution
Unlike Diablo 4, which added WASD via a post-launch patch, Path of Exile 2 was the first game to fully utilize it, achieving true separation of movement and aiming. The mouse is dedicated to aiming and skill selection, while the buttons are used for character movement, allowing the character to cast spells in one direction while moving in another.
PoE 2's WASD system feels more like an eight-way twin-stick shooter than a simple mouse-based interface. Players generally consider it superior to Diablo 4's WASD system.
In the game, you can't simply brute-force bosses; your survival depends on judging enemy movements, positioning, and timing your dodges. This makes the precise and responsive WASD controls crucial for avoiding being one-shotted.
Meanwhile, GGG designed a new class specifically for WASD, Mercenary, which uses crossbows and transforms combat into an equidistant perspective game. You need to anticipate moving targets and use high-penetration arrows, and WASD system makes this gameplay completely different from traditional archery controls.
Besides its combat advantages, WASD also significantly reduces the physical strain on players. As one player put it, "Frantically clicking the mouse in ARPGs hurts my hands. WASD feels like playing a normal game; I can play for hours without feeling any discomfort."
Skill Gem System
Skill Gem System has been completely revamped, eliminating many of the drawbacks of PoE1 while retaining and enhancing game depth. In PoE1, your skills were tied to slots and connections on equipment, meaning that finding a perfect chest piece only to discover the slot didn't match was incredibly frustrating.
PoE2 completely removed this limitation, freeing you from gear anxiety. When changing equipment, you don't need to worry about disrupting skill mechanics; upgrading equipment is no longer a sacrifice.
Support Gem Limitation: To encourage character build diversity and prevent the extreme situation of stacking five gems on a single skill, each character can now only socket one identical Support Gem, forcing players to make meaningful trade-offs.
At the same time, Support Gems now focus more on mechanic changes and practicality than simple stats, making combat more interesting and decision-making more strategic. Skill Gem System includes 240 Active Skill Gems and 200 Support Gems, offering an astronomical number of build combinations for both veteran and new players to explore.
Boss Design
Boss battles are a major highlight of Path of Exile 2. Most ARPGs treat bosses as mere tanks absorbing massive amounts of damage, with a few easily predictable heavy attacks. PoE 2 takes a different approach.
The game heavily borrows design principles from Soulslike Games: meticulously designed, punitive, learnable combat that ultimately yields rich rewards. The more difficult the enemy, the more Path of Exile 2 Currency you gain.

Here, each boss's attack is accompanied by visual or auditory cues, but these cues are usually subtle, brief, or require players to make split-second decisions. You can't just stare at the glowing ground circles; you must observe the boss's posture, weapon charging animations, and even environmental cues.
Therefore, every boss fight is a dual test of the player's character development and reaction speed. This perfectly illustrates what the game director said at the time: "If you die, you should know exactly why."
